JANUARY 10th MEETING

At our meeting in January, we will be joined by our local quilt teacher-author LINDA J. HAHN. Linda's lecture last year, "Stashbashers", was very well received and inspired us to use up all those scraps in our closets. Linda's last book, Insider's Guide to Quilting Careers (written with Merry May), included interviews and tips from many people who have taken the next step to getting paid for doing what they love. Linda will be sharing some of this information with us this month in her lecture "Don't Quit Your Day Job".

If you did not complete the pre-lecture questionnaire at last month's meeting, click here to have the questionnaire sent to you by email. Linda will collate the responses and address some of the top questions that guild members have regarding careers in quilting.

Linda MIGHT have copies of her new book, New York Beauty Simplified, which will be released in January. Be the first on the block to own a signed copy! For more information on Linda, visit her website http://www.froghollowdesigns.com/.

Also at the meeting, we will be forming teams for February's Charity Race, and welcoming our new officers.

For the meeting, please remember:
BLOCK OF THE MONTH - Let's start out the year with many participants - maybe this will be your month to win...
CHARITY - Any completed blocks, quilt tops, or completed quilts, as well as fabric and batting donations, will be happily accepted by our new Charity Chairpeople.  Thanks again to Barbara and Kim for a job well done last year. We gave away a record number of quilts in December, not to mention pillowcases and preemie quilts. Thank you letters were read at last month's meeting for some of the donations already delivered.
TEDDY BEAR CLOTHES - More teddy bears should be available in March or April, but bring the clothes in the meantime and we'll dress them when they arrive! We dressed all the bears we were given this year for Family and Children's Services of Monmouth County to deliver at Christmas.
NON-PERISHABLE FOOD DONATIONS - Any items donated will go to Samaritan Center as usual. Winter is a difficult time of year, as donations generally fall off after the holidays.
FAT QUARTER SWAP - Don't forget to bring your Fat Quarter for the swap. Participation was very low last year - let's try to remember from now on. This month's color is: YELLOW. For the full list of Fat Quarter Colors for the year, click here.
DOOR PRIZES - We are returning to the previous year's method of bringing Door Prizes each month when we sign up. Don't forget that signing up for setup/cleanup/refreshments/doorprize at least once a year is required of all members. Of course you may sign up for any month you choose, but a suggestion was made that choosing your birthday month will help you remember!
SHOW AND TELL - Bring something to share, whether it's a completed quilt or a work in progress!

DECEMBER 13th MEETING

At the December meeting, we will have our annual holiday Mocktail Party. Bring your favorite appetizer or dessert and we'll have a great time!

MORE PROGRAM INFO:
Looking forward to January, we will have our favorite local teacher/author LINDA J. HAHN again. This time her lecture will be "Don't Quit Your Day Job - Careers in Quilting". At the December meeting, we will have a short questionnaire from Linda to help her choose which topics most interest our members. There is a small possibility that she will have copies available of her new book "New York Beauty Simplified", which will be published in January - hot off the press!

Still looking down the 2011 road:
--Start thinking about teams for the February charity race
--Don't forget to bring items to donate for our sale, tentatively planned for March or April. Gently used books, fabric or sewing/quilting items are welcome! Proceeds will benefit the guild's program and library funds.

AT THE DECEMBER MEETING:
We will have our final collection of TEDDY clothes for the year - looks like we will once again have dressed over 200 teddy bears to be given to children in need through Family and Children's Services and the Salvation Army. Of course, we plan to continue the program next year, so keep knitting/sewing!

Please bring back any remaining CHARITY BLOCKS, so that we can put them together for quilts to be distributed as soon as possible. The same goes for any charity quilts that you took home for sandwiching or tying. Barbara and Kim have done a fabulous job with the charity projects this year - we should have more quilts to distribute this year than ever before (and that doesn't count preemie blankets and pillowcases). Thank you to everyone who contributed fabric and batting, sewed one of those wonderful blocks of the month, helped with piecing the quilt tops, or took home kits to sandwich and quilt or tie.

Don't forget your BLOCK OF THE MONTH.

Bring in any NON-PERISHABLE FOOD for the Samaritan Center Food Bank - this is a difficult time of the year

FAT QUARTER OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER's colors are RED, GREEN or HOLIDAY FABRIC. We haven't had too much participation in this - try to remember to bring it in this month.

It's time to turn in your MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL and annual dues of $30 - extra forms will be available if you didn't get one in November.

See you then!

August 9th Meeting

At our August 9th meeting (at the air-conditioned Grace Lutheran Church), we will be working on a make it-take it project.  Snap sacks will be distributed including all materials to complete the top, backing and binding. You will need some basic sewing supplies, a sewing machine, and a piece of batting approximately 24 inches square - see the newsletter for a list of suggested supplies. It is not necessary to bring the batting to the meeting, as you will probably not be quilting the project that evening. Completed project will be a 20 inch square heart wall hanging. This would be a great project to work on as a team, so call your friends and arrange to share a machine and supplies.

Don't forget:
--The CHARITY chair people will not be at the meeting (Happy vacation!) so hold on to any completed items until September. There are still some kits available to take home.
-- We will again discuss the upcoming QUILT DISPLAY, and hopefully everyone will decide how to help out by signing up to assist one of the committee chairs.
-- TEDDY BEAR clothing is always welcome
-- FAT QUARTER OF THE MONTH - August's theme is beach or summer novelty prints - let's have some fun with it! We have not had much participation in the Fat Quarter of the month - remember that this is one of the monthly fund raisers for the guild budget as well as a chance to go home with a bunch of fun coordinated fat quarters!
-- SHOW AND TELL - maybe a few more of the Challenge quilts have been completed?
-- Did you sign up for SNACK? Beverages are always welcome!

Charity Race in February

Plan to join in the fun at February's meeting when we participate in the semi-annual Charity Race. Sign up forms were circulated in January, but feel free to contact the Charity Chairs, Barbara N. and Kim L. to join a team (or plan to bring iron/ironing mat, sewing machine, or rotary cutting materials to the meeting and fill in where needed). Hopefully, we will have a bunch of completed quilt tops by the end of the evening.

Charity Block of the Month packets were distributed at January's meeting - be sure to bring finished String Blocks, Dinosaur Applique Blocks, or Ribbon Blocks to the next meeting. Additional pre-cut Ribbon Block kits are also available from Barbara or Kim. Don't forget that this year, you will receive points for each block, quilt top, or finished quilt turned in (be sure your name is on the bag) and for each yard of fabric or batting donated. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the year for members with the most points!

Stashbashers Unite!

Thank you to Linda J. Hahn for her fabulous "Stashbasher" lecture at January's meeting. Linda's trunk show of quilts, along with her lecture and handout, have us all looking at our scrap bins in a new way. The variety of fabrics and designs in her quilts have us re-thinking our fabric storage options!

Linda has been named the 2009 National Quilting Association Certified Teacher of the Year. Be sure to visit her website, http://www.twocountryquilters.com/.

Watch for information on our next guest lecturer, Lacey J. Hill, scheduled to speak at April's meeting.

Molly Pitcher Stitcher Charity Projects

We are a busy group. Our current projects:
Charity block of the month (each month there is a pieced and an applique block) plus the string quilted block which is collected all year. These are collected to assemble into lap sized quilts for children. Also this year we are making lap quilts for veterans.
Charity race: Twice a year, during regular meetings, members bring supplies (iron/ironing mat, rotary cutter/mat or sewing machine) and form teams. We are given fabric and instructions by the charity coordinators and "race" to see which team can complete the quilt top in the shortest time. Every year, this evening provides us with at least 10 quilt tops which are later sandwiched, quilted and added to the charity quilt distribution.
Preemie quilts: These tiny quilts (14x17) are used to brighten up the isolets of preemies and hopefully will give their anxious parents something cheery to look at while the wait. About 350 babies go through each neo-natal unit per year and there are several in New Jersey. Other sizes requested are: 18x30; 24x30, and 34x36.
Pillowcases: Sew standard pillowcases in happy child-friendly fabrics. Pre-wash and package in individual quart-sized zipper bags. These are delivered to local hospitals for children undergoing treatment.
Teddy bears: Each year we receive new plush teddy bears from the Salvation Army, which we dress in a variety of clothing - some members knit sweaters, some sew dresses or tops and pants, some purchase clothing sets on sale in local craft stores. These are given to Family and Children's Services of Monmouth County to be distributed at Christmas. Last year (2009) we dressed over 200 bears.
Current needs: Donations are needed of child-friendly quilt shop quality cotton fabrics, especially in sizes for backings and borders; cotton or polyester batting in lap quilt or preemie quilt sizes; completed quilt blocks to assemble into kits; and of course, we are always happy to accept completed quilts!
